Interface between medical IBD and surgery
Surgical collaboration is integral to the coherent management of IBD. Clinical trials on reducing the risk of relapse after surgery for simple (TOPPIC) or complex Crohn’s disease (PREVENT) are in progress. The joint management of acute severe colitis is a particular area of expertise, with critical examination of longterm outcomes after emergency colectomy (see publications), as well as being the one of the top recruitment sites for a comparison between infliximab and cicosporin (CONSTRUCT) as rescue therapy. Critical appraisal of the outcomes of ileocaecal resection and risk factors for anastomotic leak, pouch function, a randomised rial of sacral nerve stimulation for distal colitis, lymphatic endothelial function in intestinal transplantation.
