PUBLIC AND PATIENT INVOLVEMENT, ENGAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATION (PPIEP)

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funds the work of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections at University of Oxford. The HPRU is a team of researchers who work with UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to carry out research into the development and evaluation of health interventions - activities aimed at reducing risks or threats to health. We focus on the areas that UKHSA has prioritised, and these are mainly in the area of infection and infectious diseases.

To help guide our research, we actively seek the involvement of patients and members of the public - known as patient and public involvement (PPI) - to help us with each stage of the research process. This can include helping decide what research questions to ask through to sharing the results of our research with others. We have established a Steering Committee Advisory Group to guide us in this work. 

Strategy

At the Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) team we have developed and refined our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) aims as of March 2021:

  • Our aim for public involvement is to improve the quality and relevance of our research in antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections.
  • Our aim for public engagement is to raise awareness of our research and to share the knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections.

Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation (PPIEP) Committee

The Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation Committee (PPIEP) consists of representatives including members of the general public and representatives of the MMM team. It is led by the PPIEP Lead and supported by the Coordinator.

Its aim is to ensure that the research addresses the needs and concerns of the local communities and its results are appropriately communicated, by providing input at all stages of the research cycle and co-designing the Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation strategy and activities.

It is responsible for coordinating and supporting the activities of the MMM research team, and for the implementation of the PPIEP Strategy and activities.
