bird-lieberman.pngDr Bird-Lieberman (MB BChir, MA, MRCP, PhD) trained at the University of Cambridge. During her specialist training in Gastroenterology she undertook a Medical Research Council funded PhD in Oncology within the Hutchison-MRC research centre. She was appointed an NIHR/Wellcome Clinical Lecturer in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Cambridge in 2011 and took up her current post as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Oxford in 2013.

Dr Bird-Lieberman is a general Gastroenterologist with a particular clinical interest in endoscopy, cancers of the gut, Barrett’s oesophagus and endoscopic screening and surveillance (screener for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program). She is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy Research Committee and an editor for BMC Gastroenterology.

Research Interests:

bird-lieberman-nature-med-2012.jpgDr Bird-Lieberman’s research interest lies in the early detection and management of cancers of the gut. In particular she works on the development of tools to use at endoscopy to highlight early and pre-cancerous changes that would otherwise be missed (molecular imaging). This early detection has the potential to prevent cancers of the gastrointestinal tract of to cure them at an early stage without the need for surgery. She also works on the development of blood tests to help predict which people might be at particular risk of developing cancer in the future (biomarkers).
