Clinical Trials Facility (CTF)

  • The facility works alongside the Translational Gastroenterology and Liver Unit (TGLU) within the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, and the Gastrointestinal Department on Level 5 of the main hospital.

    Open trials

The CTF runs several commercially sponsored clinical trials in:

    • Liver Cirrhosis
    • Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
    • Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC)
    • Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH)
    • Metabolic Associated Steatotic Liver Disease
    • Alcohol-related Liver Disease (ALD)
    • IgG4 Disease
    • Viral Hepatitis.

    DeLIVER consortium

Professor Ellie Barnes leads the DeLIVER consortium in Oxford, a large multicentre, national study aimed at early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with cirrhosis.

This programme is divided into three separate studies; PearlSeLINA and Delphi, with the aim of identifying those patients most at risk of developing HCC, comparing imaging techniques for patients recently diagnosed with small HCC and studying the functioning of liver cells.

    Non-commercial national clinical trials

The team is also involved in several non-commercial national clinical trials.

    Alco Change

A randomised controlled trial aimed at reduction and abstinence from use of alcohol using a dedicated smartphone app.

    ASEPTIC

A randomised placebo-controlled trial using an antibiotic to prevent spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhotic patients with ascites.

    REDUCe2

A randomised controlled trial assessing whether palliative long-term ascitic drains result in better health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to large volume paracentesis in patients with refractory ascites due to advanced cirrhosis.

    REACT-AVB

A randomised controlled trial of early transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent-shunt in acute variceal bleeding.

    CirrhoCare

A real-world, randomised controlled study, to determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of CirrhoCare digital home monitoring and management in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

    Cohort trials

    HCV, IgG4, PSC, PBC, AIH
