Knowledge Mobilisation

Knowledge mobilisation (KM) is the process of getting the right information to the right people in the right format at the right time, so as to influence decision making.

It includes dissemination, knowledge transfer and knowledge translation.

Our strategy for knowledge mobilisation/policy-maker engagement is based on strong partnership working with our stakeholders and embedding KM throughout the research process.

Our goal is to improve and protect population health: Knowledge Mobilisation is integral.

Our KM strategy will therefore:

• Embed KM within organisational cultures

• Develop collaborations and facilitate engagement

• Support active and varied dissemination and communication

• Measure impact and evaluate success

We have developed a Knowledge Mobilisation Toolkit containing an array of tools and resources plus supporting information to help users navigate the Toolkit.

We have shared, promoted and facilitated the use of our Toolkit across a number of networks and organisations, supporting researchers to generate maximal impact from their research.

This provides bespoke resources enabling HPRU researchers to identify:

-WHO: key audiences (through stakeholder mapping)

-WHAT: key messages to generate action

-HOW: varied mechanisms of communication tailored to stakeholders

Capitalising on these established foundations, we will increase focus on:

1. Interactions: bringing multiple communities together

2. Measuring impact

Resources

Resources are split into four sections:

Performing KM: resources to support open team discussions and the production of a KM plan, including stakeholder mapping, communications planning and a KM engagement framework designed by the UKHSA team

Evaluating KM: resources to support teams in evaluating their KM capacity, celebrate good practice and plan for improvement, including a KM self-assessment tool, an impact evaluation framework and information on monitoring and evaluating policy engagement.

Reporting KM: documents as required for NIHR KM reporting
