Research Overview
Palliative care is the care of people with any progressive, life-limiting illness. Its central tenets are effective symptom management, and psychosocial support of both patients and their families/caregivers. The Palliative Care Research Group is based at Sir Michael Sobell House, Oxford, an 18-bedded specialist palliative care service with outreach services into the community and acute hospitals. Our clinical research programme has strong links within the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University. We collaborate with colleagues across the UK and have strong national and international links.
Our objectives are to advance the quality of palliative and end of life care through research and the promotion of a research and critical thinking culture. We aim to design and execute clinically-focused research and disseminate our findings, locally, nationally and internationally. A key thrust of our research is on end of life care for people with incurable cancer and advanced non-malignant disease, in terms of symptom management, health service delivery and patient and family experience. As a young specialty, the evidence-base for palliative medicine needs to be built up. Our fit within the Experimental Division of the Nuffield Department of Medicine lies in the relevance of palliative and end of life care to virtually every chronic disease and life-threatening illness being investigated in other parts of the NDM. The research methods we employ are necessarily mixed methods, the quantitative and interpretive approaches being equally relevant to our field.
We work and collaborate through one-to-one and peer support within and beyond our organisation.
