Dimenhydrinate in children with acute gastroenteritis and vomiting
Uhlig U., Pfeil N., Uhlig H.
Antiemetic drugs are still prescribed in a high percentage of children with infectious gastroenteritis. In Germany, dimenhydrinate is most frequently prescribed although there is no recommendation by treatment guidelines. So far the therapeutic efficacy of dimenhydrinate has not been shown in children with gastroenteritis and vomiting by randomized controlled trials. Electronic databases are a powerful tool to describe the current prescription pattern by paediatricians. Knowledge of current prescription pattern in combination with results of randomized controlled trials is necessary to implement treatment options that are based on evidence in order to improve paediatric treatment quality.
