The Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) operates unit-based formal mentoring schemes for all externally funded research fellows. The overarching aim of the mentoring schemes is to provide individualised, independent, confidential support and guidance for fellows to develop their long term career goals. Each mentee is assigned two mentors from within the department with whom they meet on an agreed basis, but at least once per year. Mentors are recognised leaders in their fields, with vast professional experience and thus are well-positioned to provide informed advice to their mentees. Where a mentee is clinically qualified we aim to ensure that at least one mentor is also clinically qualified.
