Biography

Dr Waleed Fateen is a Consultant Hepatologist and Pancreato-Biliary Physician at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a Clinical Academic within the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford. His work sits at the interface of experimental medicine and clinical practice, with a focus on improving the early detection and monitoring of liver and biliary cancer.

His translational research programme focuses on the development of affordable genomic diagnostics for hepatocellular carcinoma and biliary malignancies, using minimally invasive samples including blood, bile, and biliary brushings. This work builds on genomic insights from large-scale sequencing studies and aims to translate these discoveries into practical tests that can be deployed within routine clinical pathways.

Alongside his experimental medicine work, Dr Fateen leads the development of digital platforms to support liver cancer care pathways and patient-centred research, with an emphasis on integrating clinical data, outcomes, and real-world practice. He is Chair of the hepatocellular carcinoma section of the Advanced Liver Cancer Multidisciplinary Team in Oxford and serves as the South Central Regional Lead for Gastroenterology and Hepatology within the NIHR Research Delivery Network. He also contributes to the supervision of DPhil students and clinical research trainees, focusing on translational cancer diagnostics and experimental medicine.
