`Microscopic colitis': classification and terminology

Microscopic colitis1–4 represents an area of communication difficulty, especially between gastroenterologists and histopathologists. The authors of this commentary welcome the paper of Libbrecht et al.5 in this issue of Histopathology which describes a form of microscopic colitis. This exemplifies the fact that the original classification of lymphocytic or collagenous colitis is a little limited for routine diagnosis and understanding of the aetiology of microscopic colitis. The unhelpful term `non‐specific colitis' is best avoided, so the classification of microscopic colitis needs to evolve.
