Satish Keshav, a lynchpin of the TGU and a fine colleague and mentor to many in the Unit died unexpectedly on Wednesday 23rd January. The sudden loss of Satish is tragic for his family and for all of us who were lucky enough to be his friends. In due course we will post an obituary and some memories of his work.

The University of Oxford Immunology Network has driven the development of a Human Immune Discovery Initiative (HIDI), an initiative that aims to improve accessibility to immunological assays and expertise for all researchers across the University (and beyond). The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2014 was held over the 1st to the 6th of July at the Royal Society in London. Dr Nathan West and Sarah McCuaig from the Translational Gastroenterology Unit created a short video entitled 'You're never alone...immune-bacterial interactions in the gut', which demonstrated the duel between our immune cells and the bacteria colonising our colons.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses a group of inflammatory conditions such as Crohn\u2019s and ulcerative colitis, which currently affect about 1% of the population in the UK, Europe and North America. It is an illness that happens behind closed doors, but the impact for the patient and their family and friends is often harrowing. Prof Simon Travis, a leading consultant at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, is interviewed about IBD.
The BBSRC is celebrating 20 years of Great British Bioscience by holding a science festival in Bethnal Green in London from 14th-16th November. Scientists from the TGU will be showcasing their giant gut wall in the exhibit entitled \u201cFriends in Low Places\u201d which was put together by collaborators at the University of Reading.
