Philip Bejon
Director Modernising Medical Microbiology
I am Director of Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM), co-leading with Sarah Walker. I was previously Director of the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme, a collaborative Programme formed by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Wellcome and University of Oxford. I am a clinician with specialist training in infectious disease. I have an interest in the evaluation of vaccines, including malaria, yellow fever and Ebola vaccines. I have undertaken studies of naturally acquired immunity to malaria and human challenge models, and have an interest in bone infection and osteomyelitis.
In MMM my interests include work on bacterial genomics (including genomic determinants of AMR), bone infection (including trials and clinical definitions) and metagenomic tests. I work with colleagues in MMM on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease. Our work in MMM is part of and supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Oxford, and led by Sarah Walker we lead the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in working on healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance. In addition to our genomics and laboratory work, PIs in the unit work on large healthcare datasets, underpinned by the Infections in Oxfordshire Research Database (IORD).
I am a BRC Steering Committee member, and Chair the Oxford Tropical Ethics Committee.
