Leading Experimental Medicine and MRC Professor, Katja Simon, heads a team of scientists in developing a new method of boosting the ageing immune system using the naturally occurring chemical compound spermidine. Spermidine has potential to make vaccines more effective in the elderly, which in future could help protect this vulnerable population from seasonal flu and other infections.

Public Health England (PHE), from the 1st January 2015 has appointed Experimental Medicine's Professor Derrick Crook as the their new Director of Microbiology.
NDM took part in this year\u2019s Cheltenham Science Festival. Over the 6 day event, 45 volunteers from 5 different units took turns in running the NDM stall. On Monday 3rd June members of Daniel Wilson's team explained antibiotic resistance with a bacteria coconut shy, card game, \u2018dance dance evolution\u2019 interactive dance mat game and other fun activities. The following day, researchers from Paul Kenerman and Ellie Barnes' groups made virus models out of air dough, newspaper and sequins, explained personalised medicine choices with flow charts and sweets, and made DNA bracelets.
14th June each year is the World Health Organization (WHO) world blood donor day. Blood donation is essential to save the lives and/or improve the health of many patients. Dr John Frater is a MRC Senior Clinical Fellow in the Experimental Medicine Division and a practicing clinician in acute medicine. His main research interest is trying to eradicate HIV. NDM spoke to Dr Frater about the importance of blood donation and why in the UK we screen all donated blood for diseases such as HIV.
A group of NDM scientists, from Professor Fiona Powrie's Translational Gastroenterology Unit, are showing an exhibit at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition being held between 1st and 6th July. Their exhibit is entitled 'Immune-bacterial interactions' which explores how illnesses, such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease, are caused by changes in the relationship between gut microbes and the immune system.
The launch event of Oxfordshire Science Festival, the Science in Your World science fair, took place on Saturday 8th March 2014. Over the course of the day more than 5,000 people visited the bustling mini-science fair in Bonn Square. Visitors, both young and old, soaked up the sunshine and visited a diverse range of STEM-related stalls. A team of NDM staff and student volunteers presented an exciting collection of games and activities, which highlighted some of the exiting research taking place across the Department.
